Heritage is a Pattern

About this artwork

2024, Acrylic Paint and Medium on paper, 150 x 200 cm

Venice Biennale 2024 - Zimbabwe Pavilion Undone’ - 20 April - 24 November 2024

A universal language is created through the fusion of multiple heritages. This work is strongly influenced by the chevrons and checker patterns on the walls of the several dry stone walls of the ancient monuments of Great Zimbabwe and Naletale. A strong spiritual feeling is created by the use of colours, namely red, black and white. The wall piece is symbolic of the mark colonialism left on Zimbabwe. There is also a feeling of bloodshed standing for the long fight for independence.
